Dude... dissertation so very nearly done... well, except for the editing and the conclusion and the binding and the contents... but I have 7748 words.

My Shakespeare essay... I did have a title, but I've forgotten it. It's in tomorrow. Luckily, it's formative, so if I email and say 'aargh! dissertation! Please can I have an extension, pretty pretty pretty please... with bucketloads of sugar and cream and other stuff...

Oh yeah, in all that excitement about writing about Balrogs, I forgot lunch. (Balrogs ftw! Merlin vs Balrog... Sam'n'Dean vs Balrog... ^_^ utter glee)

Dude...

I really should be working on my dissertation (I have 4230 words... stop judging me) but I spent the entire morning re-reading over my [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin fic and FINALLY posting it.

It's over, thank God it's gone. 63000 words in the end (minus a hundred or so).

Aargh... and I really don't want to do my dissertation. I like it in concept. It's cool in concept, but in real life, I think it should get over itself and stop sounding pretentious.

It's like that character you think is awesome on screen but you really wouldn't want to meet in real life. Like The Comedian, or Rorschach.

Yes, I did just manage to boil my degree down to a Watchmen simile. My College Dad's entire dissertation was on comic books (inc. Watchmen [yes I know it's a graphic novel, so sue me]). I think I'm being pretty restrained.

One of my English teachers once had a theory that Buffy could teach you everything you ever needed to know about English literature as well.

Why didn't I do my dissertation on that?

Yes I'm procrastinating by babbling, but aargh...

Dude - Hiatus is over, and I got enough of my dissertation over with that I allowed myself to watch it. w00t!

Spoilers )

O-kay then.

My dissertation is coming along alright, although I've become a little bit stuck on one of the sections. I'm on 3517 words out of 8000 now... so I'm almost half way. I'm aiming for 4k before the end of the day. Then if I can manage 4k ish tomorrow (Never going to happen) then I can spend Monday and Tuesday on the Shakespeare Essay, Wednesday and Thursday proofreading dissertation and hitting my head against a large wall, and then Friday handing dissertation in and packing. Oh, and going to the library to get the books out for the three essays I need to write over Easter. Yay!

Home in a week. Aargh.

Also, my washing is taking up half of my room and I'm sitting at an angle to the desk, which is killing my back.

And... in conclusion, MEME - from [livejournal.com profile] kelene

handwriting meme

For those of you who don't want to be spoiled, I even added in a bi-ig space so you wouldn't be. Tags include - anyone who wants to do it.

Dammit, dammit, dammit...

I'm on the final scene of my [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin fic (I know, finally) but Arthur and Merlin are refusing to get to the point, they keep talking in circles round each other and I have a page of them answering each other in questions and it's all going horribly wrong and is made of epic fail and I really hate this fic now.

(not to mention it's at 64k... SIXTY FOUR THOUSAND WORDS... that used to be the eleventh question on Who Wants to be a Millionaire? *headdesk*

However, that and the slight deadline issue means for convenience two betas might be better than one. Any volunteers?)

Gah... I think I'll just delete the whole conversation and start again. The sooner I get this finished the sooner I can devote myself completely to my dissertation and other work and actually get some sleep instead of lying awake in bed trying to plan out my time).

ETA: Oh, and so far today I have:
greased up a chicken, felt up potatoes and conversed regarding the optimum bendiness of a carrot.

Yes, I was making roast dinner, why do you ask?

Graduation timetable's up... Friday, 3rd July. Somehow that makes it all so much more real.

And the fact that I have nothing to do once I finish is beginning to scare me as well as my parents now. Which means that I'm avoiding things (including my dissertation which is due in three weeks, and which I haven't, you know, started yet).

But dude, graduation (or congregation as they seem to insist on calling it - weird people that they are) is at 9 in the morning. 9 am! Gah.

Holy shit... I'm graduating.

if I get everything done

Ha! I have done work for my dissertation. Admittedly, at this point in time working on my dissertation means rereading fantasy series I haven're read for ages and taking notes on incidents of fire in them. Which I'm fine with.

However, I have come up with a theory/connection/thing.

Merlin has warped my world view of everything. I was rereading Tamora Pierce (magic is fire in that, and it's actually very useful, I don't care if it's not exactly literature) and the whole time through Jon and Alanna's relationship (not in bed) I was thinking of Arthur and Merlin. It was uncanny. I have long thought that the Merlin fandom feels like the Gundam Wing fandom used to, back in the beginning - with the amount of AU fanfic out there and the male-male relationships and the central 5 characters (I'm including Lancelot, so shoot me, he's central to fanon) Arthur's like Heero, Merlin's not exactly like Duo, but that's not really the point. They have a similar fanon relationship a lot of the time.

But now: Alanna is Jon's squire and therefore saddles his horse/takes care of his armour/etc and Jon is a Prince, and a noble one and sometimes a bit of a prat, but usually in protection of his friends. Magic isn't outlawed, but Alanna has a secret (she's a girl... obviously). It's all just too similar for me.

Oh, and I wrote zombie!fic. Sorry about that. In which there are chainsaws and shotguns and Merlin and Arthur are (as far as they know) the last living people on earth. And Shaun of the Dead references.

Okay, today I have:
- eaten mince-pies
- sung Christmas songs
- sung Christmas carols
- watched while my dad drilled holes into a Christmas tree in a valiant effort to get it to stay upright while swearing at it and calling it a son of a camel O.o;; (it leans forwards slightly still, but that just lends it character)
- untangled all the Christmas tree lights
- decorated the Christmas tree and
- read my secret santa gift fic at [livejournal.com profile] merlin_the_elf (which is made of awesome, btw... read it, read it). My fic has also been posted, but I am sworn to secrecy... although there are at least two people who will be able to tell immediately.

I've also done research for my dissertation, but that is not Christmassy and therefore shall be overlooked as beneath this season of joy and festivity. (Although, when reading Tolkien criticism the comments scrawled in the margins are win. Honestly, the people reading the essays know far more about the books than the people writing them sometimes [and there was someone who thought that the Sam&Frodo parts of RotK and TTT were more interesting than the Aragorn/Gondor/Rohan parts and the actual war... ?!?])

Dude, it finally feels like December

Waiting for Spn 4.10. Lalalalalaaa

That and reading for my dissertation, which honestly I have to pat myself on the back for. No one else I know gets to read books on the origins of the Phoenix myth and Gormenghast and LotR for their degree.

Of course, the Phoenix myth is a lot more involved than I ever realised... however, this has now given me Merlin plotbunnies, who are bouncing around nipping at my ankles twitching their little noses and telepathically commanding me to write them.

I don't have time for this! Why do I only ever get inspiration when there are a million other things to do, or at 3 in the morning when I'm dead on my feet and can barely write straight?

So... I now have: 3 straight Merlin fics, My mega Merlin fic of plotty DOOM, A Supernatural/Merlin crossover, A Supernatural/Dr Who crossover to be written. A Supernatural fic that is written and needs serious polishing, a Merlin picture that needs colouring (because Merlin himself still isn't done and after I've finished him I need to colour Arthur and the background and I hate backgrounds) plus a Shakespeare essay and much much dissertation work. Oh, and reading for next week.

One of my fellow English students came into the lecture today, sat down and, before I even spoke, told me that she was having a crap day because her housemate blew a fuse the night before, made her come out to try and fix it, she fell off the chair she had to stand on to get to the fuse box and an airer fell on top of her. Somehow my amusement at the slapstick humour of the situation was not welcome... It didn't help that she's the type of person you cannot imagine ever falling over - ever.

I tried to convince her she would laugh about it in years to come, and she could write an epic novel about it, but she still felt that her housemate was evil and must die.

Oh, and in other news. It snowed. I was walking home and it started snowing! It's still November... and it's not even cold. I was seriously considering taking my coat off at the time. What is wrong with the weather?

One last thing: as soon as I watch this ep of Spn we're into hiatus! Meep.

Wispa bars are made of awesome. They are food of the Gods. Cadbury's brought forth the wispa bar and it was good. People rejoiced and celebrated. There was dancing in the streets. But then Cadbury's took the wispa bar away again and the shadows danced across the land, smothering the cheer and optimism of the nation. There was much weeping and gnashing of teeth.

But now the shadows have gone and the wispa bar is once again where it should be (in the shop across the street, and, incidentally, in my stomach) and all is right and good and rapturous in the world.

In case you hadn't realised. Wispas make me happy.

I have actually done work towards my dissertation today. I have pages of notes on the Hobbit and I have ideas. ZOMG!

Bad things (but not especially bad) our boiler is playing up. Some radiators are one sometimes, and others are off at the same time, and the timer system has no correlation whatsoever with what time the radiators actually come on. For example: the timer is set to 6-10 am and pm. My radiator (which is at 2 out of a possible 4) was boiling hot at 5.50 this morning when I woke up, but freezing cold at five to ten. It was also on at half twelve - again boiling hot, when Laura's radiator... which was on the same temperature as mine, was freezing cold. It is currently not on (15.12) and we're all very confused.

Also, the upstairs bathroom shower leaked, down the walls into the first floor landing/stairs. However, the nice maintenance man (John) came round this morning (he works weekends! He is wonderful!) and redid all the sealant, so it should be fine in a couple of hours... apparently the landlords can be efficient sometimes.

Now... because I haven't done this yet:

Supernatural! Spoilers! )

Basically - in summary - I want a Jensen Ackles. Please Santa, pretty please.

Finally, two less interesting and more weird things.

Nanowrimo. I have some names for characters - woo... I have a basic plot. I have an idea of what happens at the end (almost unheard of for me) and I have no sodding time to write it in... so I'll probably end up winning again. I am fully intending to wake up around 6.45 every morning to fit in some writing time before I'd usually be awake. It worked the first year I did it. Why not now?

Secondly... lastly... nthly... I signed up for a merlin/arthur secret santa... I am an idiot. I have no time. But I got my prompt on Thursday and I hav plot bunnies already. The only problem is that I have never written the pairing or the fandom before so it promises to be an interesting month (yes, it overlaps with Nano... yes I have a dissertation, three formative essays, two summative essays and a lorry full of reading to do; no, I don't have any idea how I'm going to fit it all in. I'm probaby going to have a nervous breakdown around November 12th. Yes, I am an idiot.)

Let the mayhem begin.
mariana: (Default)
Okay, so the TV license thing is sorted. Apparently it's the TV licensing people who are being idiots, because I contacted the landlords and they say they've paid it. It's in the contract as well (I checked) so if the TV people do come round I shall point at clause 3 and give them the landlord's address. ^_^

However, I have just realised that I need to have a complete title for my dissertation to be handed in by next Wednesday and I need to have agreed on this with my dissertation supervisor by then... having arranged a meeting I haven't arranged yet. ^_^;;

Everyone point to the person who's really really really screwed. *points to self*

I need to email my dissertation supervisor yesterday... and I'm still putting it off.

I do, however, have Zeppelin II now, which I am listening to. Woo! I also just educated one of my housemates in classic rock (she'd never heard stairway to heaven... O.o;;). I might have demanded that she sit down and listen... I didn't tie her down or anything. But I forced her to listen to that (she liked it - obviously) and the full version of American Pie... and a little Cheap Trick various other things.

There will be Beef Stroganoff for dinner tonight, which I am looking forward to. However the recipe was chosen and will be prepared by someone who is lactose intolerant. We're looking into getting her some counselling for her obvious suicide wish.

I have also found the perfect present for my brother (or me) only it's £120 so I am left staring at it longingly and being all mopey. Given that his birthday is on Monday it's a little late anyway. Perhaps I should send him an email saying 'this is what I'd get you if I were rich. LINK to awesome present.

I have no idea why I'm posting so often at the moment, probably some sort of procrastination technique from pretty much everything.

I had my seminar this morning, which I was nowhere near prepared enough for and it turns out that, as I am one of only two people in the class who has studied Old Norse previously I need to prepare a presentation on Old Norse Poetry for next Friday Morning. *groan*

That's pretty much all. I may post again once I have watched Spn 4x06 (which I know nothing about. I'm actually quite happy now. The only spoilers I had were for an earlier episode so now I am blissfully spoiler free again (hence default icon).

I'm going to go now... I have to email people and generally lament the fact that I have done no work...
