It is times like these, when I'm comparing Henry James and Neil Gaiman, and managing also to write an entire paragraph about Liberty being a bitch who must be bedded on a mattress of corpses, that I remember why I did this subject.

Dude... dissertation so very nearly done... well, except for the editing and the conclusion and the binding and the contents... but I have 7748 words.

My Shakespeare essay... I did have a title, but I've forgotten it. It's in tomorrow. Luckily, it's formative, so if I email and say 'aargh! dissertation! Please can I have an extension, pretty pretty pretty please... with bucketloads of sugar and cream and other stuff...

Oh yeah, in all that excitement about writing about Balrogs, I forgot lunch. (Balrogs ftw! Merlin vs Balrog... Sam'n'Dean vs Balrog... ^_^ utter glee)

Given that last time I just spammed with wordcount totals (honestly, it was worse than Nano ^_^;;) my sincere apologies, I will attempt to keep my word counts on this essay to this post because, though I can't imagine anyone gives a crap, I need somewhere to keep track.

So... here goes, as of now I have 1 and a half paragraphs at 503 words.

ETA (22.21): 912 words, but still not off the first proper paragraph... uh oh, this could end up going over severely.

ETA:(22.37): 1183 words, first main paragraph done and chocolate eaten (one row every paragraph I complete ^_^, I reward myself for good behaviour... is that weird? It's new galaxy stuff as well, with cookie pieces in. It's good mmm... chocolate) I think I need a drink.

ETA (12.01): Gave up for the night after that last update, started again this morning. 1636 words... only half way through paragraph two. At this rate I'll have to scratch the paragraph on death, which is annoying, because I like that one. It's strange to be coming in over the wordcount after the last one, where it was an uphill struggle the whole time.

ETA (12.48): 2071 words... and I'm fitting in the paragraph on death, awesome. 1.5 paragraphs + conclusion to go... Then I just have to reread and edit both of them. Joy.

ETA (14.00): 2801 words (and I've had lunch and watched an episode of the Big Bang theory, whoop!) Conclusion to go and then I'm DONE! I might get to do something else this week other than write sodding essays.

Dude, extension on [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin. w00t. Which means I have an extra week in which to do it... admittedly at the same time as writing my dissertation, but there's always something, right?

Also... there was something else I wanted to say, what was it? There's a sweepstake for premiere tickets to Watchmen in LA, but it's only available to US residents (mainland). I know that they're paying for airfares, and that International air fares would be extortionate (and there are probably millions of other reasons) but I am still put out about it.

I popped in to Waterstones today, I'm trying to get Anansi Boys with my gift card, but it's never in stock when I go in, but I have fallen in love with the Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Comic section of our Waterstones. It's right at the back and it's all enclosed. I have actually spent over half an hour just staring at books in there before now. The reason I bring it up is that there's a 'we recommend' section on the comic book shelves dedicated to Watchmen tie in merchandise. They're selling the Complete Watchmen as part of the 3 for 2 as well, so it's not like they're selling it on its own (nor is it like with The Golden Compass where they rebranded the books to go with the film - which I am still angry about (I mean, if they can call Harry Potter Sorcerer's stone and Philosopher's stone, and other countries are allowed to have their own names for it, why couldn't the UK release be Northern Lights) I didn't actually see the film, I'll admit due to timing issues, but still... grrr. In fact, it's not really the renaming of the film that gets me, it's the renaming of the books.

Sorry [/rant].

So, yes, Watchmen merchandise, Watchmen film. I hope they pull it off (and if they screw up the ending I will be so angry.)

In more television based news: Supernatural is once again in the dreaded H word... and already there are multiple spoiler alerts all over the Internet. It seems like every day three more spoiler warnings come up. If it's like this now, what'll it be like by March 4th?

So far 0/3000 words on Essay two... I know, I know - I suck at this. But I'm planning on writing it all tonight in one huge flurry of erudite brilliance.

I know, I know, but I can dream, right? And as soon as this essay's done (and I've read Absalom, Absalom! for Friday, then I can relax for one day, then my parents come up, then I have the dual joy of [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin and dissertation... shortly followed by an easter holiday filled with writing three essays (and, incidentally, my 21st birthday) followed by revision, followed by exams...

I can relax in June... that sounds about right, doesn't it? June... it's only 4 months away...four months? Wow, time really does fly when you're trying to ignore deadlines.

Oooh... and other television news: Being Human (Sunday 9 o'clock BBC3, I think) is awesome. It's dark Supernatural/horror/comedy... with the accent on the dark for everything. It involves a werewolf with major self-esteem issues (Allons y, Alonso from Dr Who), a Vampire who's on the wagon and can't really separate sex from snacking and a ghost who obsessively makes cups of tea she can't drink, and they all live together. Wacky hijinks ensue (dark wacky hijinks. I cannot stress the dark enough, there's vampire porn, except vampires don't show up on film, so it's just a naked guy dying; and the werewolf has... control issues, and I won't even get into the ghost). The vampires are planning total world domination, the three housemates just want to try and be normal. I've had to i-player it, owing to us not having digital and all, but seriously, watch it if you can.

Another four inches this morning and it has been snowing on and off all day so far. It doesn't look real though. It's all in itty bitty balls. If it weren't for the fact that it's melting in places where there are cars and grit and the temperature's quite low, you'd be forgiven for thinking that a polystyrene factory had exploded.

But my new shoe/boots are officially awesome. I didn't fall over twice and I was walking at almost my normal walking pace, also - my feet are dry, and they're comfortable. I should buy kids' boots more often (boys, I might add) they're cheaper and did I mention they are so comfortable.

It just started snowing again, quite heavily. Yay! Now I'm inside I can be happy and smug and not getting snow in my eyes and ears. Joy.

In other news: DSU brownies still rock my world. My essay on Old Norse Mythology is apparently technical and could be a very good essay (don't you hate it when people say that, especially with the accent on the 'could', you know they're thinking: 'this would be good if someone else were writing it, but as it's you I suppose we'll have to hope for vaguely coherent'). And I got a 65 for my craptastic attempt at a comparison between Blake and Coleridge, despite the fact I used Blake's Songs, which (I heard the tutor telling the person before me) are a little too simple for use at a University level. Admittedly, in order to pull my degree up to a first I'd need to drag that mark up to a 75, but that's doable right (if I avoid the stupid grammar mistakes and the paragraph long sentences... right?)

So I'm screwed if I want a first. Oy vey. C'est la vie and all that jazz.

I want to play in snow, but I have two essays to write.

Damn.

If I curl up into a ball and lie on my bed with my fingers in my ears, do you think the essays will give up and go away?

Today I did work... *listens to the gasps of surprise* I now have four pages of secondary source quotations for my Germanic Myth and Legend Essay. Only slight problem so far - I haven't reread the primary sources in the last... two years. Whoops. But all of that will be sorted tomorrow and Friday then I shall write it over the weekend and spend next week on my Forms of English Drama Essay of DOOOM...

I'm really not looking forward to that one. I'm fairly certain that everything we've learnt in the seminars has been pointless and superficial. Don't get me wrong, I like the tutor (she gave me awesome chilli flavoured Haribo that made my eyes water) but she does tend to get sidetracked by shiny things, and ask us to think about a masque to present to Gordon Brown... yep, that's right. A masque. Me and the guy next to me decided that we would have Fortune and Thrift as anthropomorphic personifications on either side of Gordon Brown, a huge dance number about the credit crunch and not borrowing money any more and then Gordon would give a speech and money would rain down from the ceiling...

But I get sidetracked. I was talking about my essay, I can't even remember what I'm going to write on at the moment, but I'm sure it will come back to me. It had better.

In other interesting things (well, interesting in a strangely bizarre way) just went out to buy cereal and discovered that the 375g packs were 89p each, while the 600g packs were £2.30 something or thereabouts. For some reason, that seems wrong.

Have got past first/second bout of writer's block on [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin and I've introduced Sophia... and Will, and Hunith. Poor Will is desperately in love with Merlin who's desperately in love with Arthur who is desperately in love with Sophia who is an evil bitch monster (as per usual) So what if it's cliche and terrible? I'm having fun!

And I will post the next chapter of Equilibrium tonight because it's been almost two weeks now and I am a terrible person, but I got distracted by Christmas and relatives and New Year and shiny new presents and DVDs (The Sarah Connor Chronicles is awesome btw, and who cares if I'm watching the Terminator series in the wrong order).

I have more ideas for Morgana centric fic as well, apparently I love writing her, but I can't put her as a background character in Merlin/Arthur fics. She demands to be centre stage for some reason. Oh, and I really want to write something angst-ridden and dark and future revolving around Merlin and Arthur but there is only a want and not a plot, so that will have to wait *sigh*.

Strange thing... in one of my fics I keep typing hand in magic instead of hand in marriage. I've done it at least five times (crack! fairytale fic, don't ask) Does that mean something?

9 more sleeps until Spn

But instead I am writing Merlin AU fic...

grr. I need to write two 1500-2000 word essays on books I have not read by next monday.

I am so screwed.
mariana: (never)
Whoop! Essay done... well, I have to cut out over 500 words and add in references but meh - I can do that any time. And I had time to watch Merlin.

Spoilers for Merlin 1x11 )

I have two ideas for Merlin fic in my pocket and I have still got about five to finish (including epic fic of plotty doom *groan*) One of them is AU student!verse because... well, just because really, and I've been reading too many AUs and I had an idea for one. Plus - I am a student. Write about what you know as the person said. The other is just a line which I know I have to write into something. I have bad magic fic for [livejournal.com profile] merlinflashfic in the works as well.

But, my first essay is done, there are two more to go, but they're not due in for two weeks... so I have a little time... that I should be spending on my dissertation and reading for tutorials, but if I get organised I should get everything finished in time.

One slight problem? Me and organisation had a falling out about year 7 and we still haven't made up. Maybe if I grovel.

But at least all of this gives me something to do on the train tomorrow.

Oh, but if anyone wants to, I also have an idea for Merlin fic based on Whose Line is it Anyway? with some characters only able to say two lines... so sue me, I want to write crack!fic. If anyone wants to supply me with suitably vague/funny/innuendoey lines I would be grateful. But maybe I shouldn't, seeing as I already have too much to do.

Okay, so I have A Literary Theory Essay to write (on Feminism, because that seems easy and there were books in the library) for Tuesday. Easy - 1500 words, except I also have an exam in Old Norse on Wednesday afternoon that I have not started revising for (this consists of 1 unseen translation, 3 seen translations and an essay question - in two hours) and a Victiorian Lit essay for which I have read no books, for Friday.

I also need to decide on modules for next year, and also look at stuff for my two summative essays for over the Easter holdiay because I'm going to need to take my secondary sources home. I have not yet booked my train.

In slightly better news (as in stuff I did while procrastinating from my essays) I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] remixredux08. I was very lucky with my assignment in that the person shipped the same way as me, if with a different tone. But did I go for my pairing? No. Oh and I now have LOTS of story. It needs serious editing and I can't write NC-17.

Also had the Informal Ball last night. I was Vitalstatistix from Asterix. Lots of people got very very drunk. It was... tiring.
mariana: (Fred)
Okay, so it's not the next day, but it's sooner than last time (not that that's difficult).

I'm back up in the freezing cold hills now, and house hunting has started, tomorrow I'm going to look at a place and there are people coming round to see our house as well. It's a bit weird, seeing as we haven't really been here that long but that's the way it is I suppose.

Also, getting essays back again... Not looking forward to getting my Harry Potter one back (yes, I wrote an essay on Harry Potter... including the phallic symbolism of wands and Harry's Oedipal complex, along with a small debate on whether Dumbledore's homosexuality could really be said to be canon) as I only wrote it to show the tutor that I had no idea what I was doing and that she was useless. Yeah - I'm passive aggressive.

Also - I got a graphics tablet for Christmas. Now all I need is a decent graphics program and I'm home and dry... anyone who can tell me one I can download free while I'm saving money to buy one would be a lofe saver. I got Artweaver, but there was a slight problem and it ended up in German. I can't figure out how to use it.

I really need to start working on my summative essay - 3000 words, just under four weeks. Easy, except I haven't read the books, or the titles, most secondary sources will be checked out of the library by now and I'm sort of panicking.

Now is not the time to panic.

Now is the time to search out new books, new films and new rubbish (and check in on [livejournal.com profile] spn_crackfic coz I'm useless and suggest a pficathon to tide us over when the writer's strike hits us).

Okay then... time to try and organise myself, again.
